James Ward is a motion designer based in Bristol and has a long history of designing and developing images for live sets and experiences. He spent 2 years working with UNKLE, developing live visuals for projection and light sculptures, as well managing the delivery of content for their multi-screen live setup. Ian Oakley is a video producer with Whitestone Media, but has been making electronic music in various forms for most of his life. He produces experimental music under the name Ian:o.
“Rear projection gives us space to perform. The stage area is often very small – so it lends itself to this very well.  We like to be at the edge of screen.  Rear projection means we can be close to the screen and not cast any shadows.”
Ian Oakley
“We wanted the brightest projector for a limited budget.  Optoma sits nicely in this and is a well-known brand with a good reputation for excellent projectors.  We also felt Optoma was really engaged and understood what we are trying to achieve – so it was more like a partnership when we chose this.”
Ian Oakley
“We had such an incredible response from the event.  The venue wants us to set it up as a regular event!”
Ian Oakley
“It was such a unique experience and I was blown away by both the visuals and audios.  Everyone loved it and the feedback I heard was that we need more of this type of immersive alternative multi dimensional music experience.”
Peter Ayres
“We will be developing more immersive shows around particular themes over the next few months and looking for venues to perform.  Watch this space!”

Rear projection gives Void_Null space to perform liveAV show

Challenge

Void_null is a collaboration of sound and pictures created by Ian Oakley and James Ward. They explore different themes through immersive live AV experiences.  They needed a bright projector for their 35-minute liveAV show.

Solution

The technology-based performers selected the Optoma ZH510T laser projector to be rear projected onto a 10-foot wide rear projection screen.  Ian explained: “Rear projection gives us space to perform. The stage area is often very small – so it lends itself to this very well.  We like to be at the edge of screen.  Rear projection means we can be close to the screen and not cast any shadows.”

The artists chose the ZH510T as it fitted in terms of brightness, longevity and their price bracket.  Ian said: “We wanted the brightest projector for a limited budget.  Optoma sits nicely in this and is a well-known brand with a good reputation for excellent projectors.  We also felt Optoma was really engaged and understood what we are trying to achieve – so it was more like a partnership when we chose this.”

The ZH510T bright and compact Full HD 5,400-lumen laser projector is easy to use and needs minimal maintenance.  With a low operating noise of 28dB, it is the quietest projector in its category. It offers up to 30,000 hours light source lifetime in full brightness mode and an independent dust certification of IP5X. Its lamp-less laser light source provides consistent brightness and colour accuracy.

Images generated by James were combined with photographs to create 35 minutes of animation.  This was played back via the laptops using Resolume, video DJing software.

Void_Null pre-set the synchronisation between its experimental electronica music and the visuals and then added a layer of improvised sound.  The two systems were linked by a Midi to ensure perfect precise synchronisation of the imagery to the fast beat of the music.

Results

Void_Null performed their LiveAV show at the West End Centre in Aldershot at an event also featuring The Sleepwalker and headliner Kayla Painter – a producer and performer from Bristol who has just released a single.

Ian said: “We had such an incredible response from the event.  The venue wants us to set it up as a regular event!”

Peter Ayres attended the event and said: “It was such a unique experience and I was blown away by both the visuals and audios.  Everyone loved it and the feedback I heard was that we need more of this type of immersive alternative multi dimensional music experience.”

Ian added: “We will be developing more immersive shows around particular themes over the next few months and looking for venues to perform.  Watch this space!”
